As it changes, it is extremely beneficial to revisit the basics. Familiarizing yourself with the basics, will help you build a solid social media foundation. Rule 1: Don’t be too serious with your marketing. Instead, make sure your social media marketing is based on being social. To do this, you will need to connect with your fans and make your brand likeable. If you have a serious message, it is okay to have serious content, but also make sure to have entertaining and fun content as well.

Rule 2: Combine inbound and outbound marketing. Inbound marketing will help you attract traffic, but it simply isn’t enough to make a marketing campaign successful. Instead, a social media marketing campaign should combine inbound and outbound marketing. Remember a paid promotion can do extraordinary things to promote your organic messaging.

Rule 3: Fantastic content, concrete offers and a definitive call to action are the best combination for a successful social media marketing strategy. Content is key here. If you have dull or uninteresting content, your other marketing offers will likely not fare well. Your content should also pertain to your product or services and engage your customers.

Rule 4: Make sure potential customers are getting something of value from your marketing campaign. To understand this process, pretend you are a potential customer. Does your campaign have something to offer you? If the answer is no, you should stop working on the current marketing idea, and come up with a strategy that makes you answer yes to the above question.

Rule 5: A successful marketing strategy will engage your brand with potential customers. When contacted, make sure to respond to inquiries in a timely manner. Use helpful and fun content to mix up your brand messages.

Rule 6: Don’t try to oversell your brand. Try to combine non-promotional and promotional information via your social media marketing strategy. Joe Pulizzi, the founder of the Content Marketing Institute, recommends sharing four pieces of relevant content for every one promotional bit of content you share.

Remember, it is possible that not all of the golden rules will apply to your particular situation, but the more rules you can apply to your brand’s marketing strategy will surely have an enormous impact on your campaign.
